Pear Tree Community School serves as an observation and practice site for Seeds to Roots, giving educators, school leaders, teacher preparation programs, university faculty, and other practitioners the opportunity to see liberatory and identity-affirming educational practices in action.
A Living Practice Site
Seeds to Roots was built from years of work with children, families, educators, and school systems. Pear Tree Community School provides a place where that work can be seen in practice.
At Pear Tree, participants can observe how the principles explored through Seeds to Roots are translated into the everyday architecture of a school: classroom environments, curriculum, relationships, adult practice, family partnership, student support, discipline, leadership, and organizational systems.
The school is also one of the places where the MIRROR framework can be seen in action. Visitors can observe how mirroring, identity development, reclamation, relationships and resilience, orientation, and reflection shape both classroom practice and the broader culture of the school.
Through selected Seeds to Roots trainings, institutes, and learning experiences, educators and leaders may have opportunities to observe at Pear Tree, study aspects of the model, and consider how these principles can be adapted within their own institutions and communities.
Pear Tree Community School is an independent Montessori-informed, social justice school in Oakland serving a predominantly African American community. The school was created around the belief that children deserve rigorous learning environments in which their identities, histories, relationships, and humanity are central to how learning is designed.
